Chris hadn't noticed the full knapsack leaning against the driver's seat. Now he nodded and reached for it. Groaning, Chris dragged the bag across the floor and handed the knapsack to the doctor. "What's in here? Rocks?"
Franklin hoisted the bag onto his back. "No. Frozen meat, flour, sugar, coffee. Ed keeps canned goods up here for emergencies. You might have to split some wood for the furnace. The days are still warm, but it'll get cold at night. You'll be all right for a few weeks, if you need to stay that long."
"Is there a phone?"
"No, but I'll leave you a cellular and my pager number. You'll be able to get hold of me any time."
After climbing out of the van Chris turned to pick up D.J. She mumbled something under her breath that sounded like, "Go away, Joe," then subsided against his chest. Chris ignored the stab of curiosity. Who the hell was Joe? For a woman who disparaged emotion she had enough men in her life.
Chris followed the doctor as he walked up the overgrown road. Tangles of grass, small trees, and shrubs hampered their progress. D.J.'s hair tickled him under the chin, and Chris rubbed the tingling skin back and forth against the top of her head to ease the itch.
"What do you know about medicine?" Franklin asked, and Chris's head jerked up. He glanced at the doctor, but the man walked ahead, intent on finding their way to the cabin.
"Enough to know I don't know much."
